May 12, 1927 ~ June 8, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Warren – Joseph Bergin, 90, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Cleveland Clinic.

Joseph Bergin known to all as “Scotty” was born May 12, 1927.  His parents were from Ireland and he was raised in Scotland in the city of Falkirk.  That is where he met his life-long sweet heart Frances and they made plans to move to America and both made the journey towards the end of 1949.  They were married upon arriving in the states in 1950 and would have celebrated their 67th anniversary on June 16.  He was a loving father of 8 children, 17 grandchildren and 20 great-children and 3 great great grandchildren.

He worked at Bridgeport Brass in Adrian, Michigan for several years before transferring to Warren, Ohio working for Alcan Aluminum.  He worked as a millwright / maintenance mechanic until his retirement. After retiring he enjoyed making chili sauce in the early morning hours daily at the Hot Dog Shoppe for many years.

He was a devout Catholic throughout his life and often attended a couple of masses daily at various churches throughout Warren.  Joseph and Frances where able to send all eight children through Catholic Schools. He was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus council #620 and took pride each year in erecting the life size nativity scene for all to enjoy as they drove past the council building. He considered himself blessed to visit the Holy Land during Lenten-Easter season.

Over the years Scotty and close friends and family catered many events and weddings making his famous “Scotty’s chicken” that everyone loved.  He and wife Frances also supported and helped with booster support and activities at St Marys and John F. Kennedy High School.

Scotty always had a joke and a laugh, never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.  In his later years, he volunteered at various hospitals walking the halls with the refreshment cart.  He also looked forward to playing Santa Claus for hundreds of children and adults for many years at various events, parties and retirement homes in the area.

He is survived by his wife Frances Bergin, five daughters Elizabeth (Nick) Cilfone from Oxford, MI, Patricia (John) Bergin-Lytton from Tijeras, New Mexico, Maureen (Anthony) Russo from Howland, OH, Carolyn (William) Gilliam from Sugar Grove, OH, Bridget (Clint) Bergin-Floyd from Southington, OH, Two sons Joseph(Bonnie) Bergin from Warren, OH, Michael Bergin from Mooresville, NC
