Dorothy Sideropolis Obituary

Chagrin Falls - Dorothy Elaine (Galanos) Sideropolis died peacefully at Arden Courts Assisted Living on Thursday morning, April 11, 2024.

She was born on June 21, 1937 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the daughter of Steven Peter and Georgia Frances (Polas) Galanos.

Dorothy married Ernest (Sidd) Sideropolis on January 27, 1957 and had two daughters Georgene Eva Kohlbacher (Brian) of Strongsville and Stefanie Ann Currington (Todd) of Chagrin Falls.

Dorothy retired in 2008 as a Consumer and Family Science teacher after 36 years with Warren City Schools. She previously worked 6 years at the Union Savings and Trust Bank as an IBM Operator. She leaves two wonderful son-in-laws and two adorable grandchildren, Jax and Kelsi Currington and many nieces and nephews and her two sisters Patrica Jean Kosmas (Charles) and Constance Marie Szymzack (Ken). Her devoted husband Ernest passed away September 1984 after only 27 years of marriage.

Our mother felt volunteering was so rewarding and necessary both physically and mentally. Dorothy was a member of the Upton House (Historical Society), Past President of Warren Junior Woman's League for 45 years; she was a member of Tag (Trumbull Art Guild), Past President of the Daughters of Penelope, receiving their Club Woman of the year award in 1998, 2006 and 2010 for outstanding work. She volunteered at the New Life Maternity Home for two years teaching young new mothers nutritional and economic meals, she was a Girl Scout leader for 6 years taking them to camp Sugarbush, was on the board for League of Woman Voters, was a member of the Arcadian club and help raise money to purchase a kidney machine for a hospital in Greece, was treasure for 10 years for the women's auxiliary of St Demetrios Church, (Philoptohos Society), applied and received a grant from the Warren Tribune Chronicle for Someplace for bedding, curtains, cleaning supplies for Make A Difference's Day, helped raise money for Ahepa to purchase a stove a microwave and a mixer floor model, past President of Church Senior Club, Member of Warren City Federation, Member Trumbull County Federation, a Member of the Yasou Club for seniors. Every month Dorothy worked serving at our community dinners and also donating a full dinner every year for 200-300 people. The newest club she joined was TRTA (Trumbull Retired Teacher Association). These are the things we know she enjoyed, as education was very important to her. She was a certified elementary principal and a secondary principal.

Dorothy’s legacy will be remembered as such by her grandchildren: “She was by far the strongest person we knew; teaching us the importance of independence, as well as standing up for what you believe in no matter what. We thank the Lord that he blessed our family with such a wonderful woman who kept us tied together and reminded us of the importance of our Greek Orthodox religion and heritage. Thinking of her reuniting with her husband, our Papou, after all of these years in Heaven brings us to tears.”

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Dorothy on Monday, April 15, 2024 from 5 to 7pm at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE, and again on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 from 10 to 11am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Chruch, 429 High St NE, Warren, OH 44481.
