Frances Bergin

Cortland - Frances Bergin (Burt), 91, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Lake Vista in Cortland.

She was born August 13, 1927 in Falkirk, Scotland.  Her parents were from Scotland where she was raised in the city of Falkirk into her early adult life.  That is where she met her future husband Joseph "Scotty" Bergin and at the young age of 22 made plans to move to the United States of America.  They both made the journey at the end of 1949 and were married upon arriving in the United States on June 16, 1950.  They enjoyed almost 67 years of marriage before he passed away in 2017.  She was a loving mother of 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.  

She worked at the Hot Dog Shoppe for 35 years and enjoyed seeing and talking with her regular customers from 1973 to 2008.  Prior to that she worked as a seamstress at both Robert Hall and Richman Brothers men's clothing stores in the Elm Road Plaza. 

She was a devout Catholic and attended mass regularly.  Joseph and Frances were able to send all eight children through Catholic Schools.  While raising the children she was engaged in many school functions over the years and helped with booster support and many other school activities at St Mary's and John F. Kennedy High School.   She also taught young children Highland dancing and coached/assisted them during performances throughout North East Ohio. 

She would also exercise daily at the YWCA participating in various aerobic and jazzercise classes into her late 70's.  She was a proud member of the Silver Sneakers club.  Frances also volunteered at local hospitals with various activities during her retirement years.

Frances is survived by five daughters Elizabeth Cilfone (Nick) from Oxford, MI   Patricia Lytton (John) from Tijeras, New Mexico   Maureen Russo (Anthony) from Howland, OH   Carolyn Gilliam (William) from Sugar Grove, OH   Bridget Floyd (Clint) from Southington, OH two sons Joseph Bergin (Bonnie) from Warren, OH   Michael Bergin from Mooresville, NC.

Preceded in death by her husband Joseph "Scotty" Bergin and daughter Barbara Billock Warren-OH, parents and two sisters in Scotland.

Family and friends may call Monday, August 27, 2018 from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel 1884 North Rd NE Warren, OH 44483. 

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at St John Paul II Parish (St. Joseph Church) at 420 North St NW, Warren, OH 44483 with Rev. Chrispher Henyk officiating.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Frances' name to St John Paul II church at 1401 Moncrest Drive NW, Warren, OH 44485.
