James J. Panagis

Washington DC – James J. Panagis, 86, formerly of Warren passed away April 1, 2019 after an unexpected diagnosis of lung cancer a couple weeks earlier in Washington DC where he has lived since 1965.

            He was born November 14, 1932, in Warren, Ohio the son of the late John and Margeta Panagis.

            He was a former graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. As a child, he learned to love school plays and magic and would have gone on a showboat had there been no Korean Warr draft looming. He attended Youngstown College as a member of ROTC and served in Germany in the Army from 1954 to 1956. Later he did postgraduate work in economics at Youngstown State and in public administration in DC.

After the Army, James worked at his father’s business in Warren. In 1963 began work as an Internal Revenue Service officer in Columbus and Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1965 he was accepted into the Administrative Intern program of the IRS in Washington, DC, where he was a personal staffing specialist and labor management relations specialist. In 1970 he worked at the new Federal Labor Relations Council. In 1972 he was chief of the personnel division at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, from which he retired in 1995.

            He is survived by his wife Jane Panagis of Washington DC, a son John Panagis of Brooklyn, NY, a sister Sylvia Stathis of Warren, and his nieces and nephews Margaret Lockwood, John P. Panagis, Pamela Dudley, Dean Strathis, Marietta Morris, and JoAnne Baker.

            He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Domestic Juvenile Judge Peter Panagis.

            Family and friends may pay their respects Monday, April 8, 2019 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 429 High St. Warren, Ohio 44481.

            A service will be Monday, at 11;00 a.m. at the Church with Fr. Constantine Valantasis officiating.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in James name to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 429 High St. Warren, Ohio 44481.
