Warren - Augustine 'Gus' Iacozili, 93, of Warren, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family June 30, at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren. Gus was born November 22, 1922 in Youngstown, OH, son of Dominic and Nicolina (Laurizzi) Iacozili Gus was a 1942 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. He began work that year at Warren City Tank and Boiler. In November of 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy. He was a veteran of World War II with the Navy rank of Chief Petty Officer, later transferring to the Marine Corp First Armored Amphibian Battalion. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was part of the Okinawa Invasion. He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946. Upon his return from the war, he went to Arizona and found his bride, Mary. They married March 21, 1946. He soon returned to the Warren area to open Gus' Service, once ran by his in-laws. It is a Warren landmark, currently run by his only son, John, located next door to his family run business, Warren Baking Company. Gus ran the service station until 1988 when he officially retired. He was an active member of the local auto racing community and a legend in the area. He was the 1954 & 1955 MARC (now ARCA) Hard Top Champion. He was inducted into the Cloverleaf Speedway Hall of Fame and the Twin State Racing Hall of Fame. Gus also raced Micro Midgets in the Warren area. Some of his most memorable moments were racing in the Cleveland area and the Akron Rubber Bowl. He was an avid fisherman, a great sailor, a Cleveland Browns and Ohio State football fan. He also remained active in the race community after retirement and attended many reunions. A summer highlight for him in the last several years was his attendance at the D-Day reenactment in Conneaut, Ohio. Some of his many achievements included his Director of Pits role in the Warren area Soap Box Derby for many years; President of Warren G. Harding Touchdown Club; founding member and Commodore of the Pymatuning Lake Sailing Club. He was a lifelong member of the B.P.O.E. Elks and the VFW, a member of the WWII Museum and Packard Museum. He was also a lifelong member of St. James Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary. In March, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends. He is also survived by his daughter Kay (Dr. Jerry) Ralph of Howland; daughter Jeannie Magri of Kansas City; son John (Cindy) of Cortland; sister Nancy Seminara of Warren. He was loved and cherished by his 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and extended family. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother, John and sons-in-law Samuel Myers (Kay) and Kenneth Magri (Jeannie), nephew, Billy, granddaughter Tracey Boyle. Gus was a remarkable man that led his life as a full participant and was never a bystander. He enjoyed every moment he spend with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He left a positive impression on everyone he met in life and will be missed by many. The family would like to thank the staff from Mercy Health Youngstown and Select Specialty Hospital for their care and compassion at Gus' time of need. NE, Warren, Ohio 44483, and Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Parish (St. James Church) on Burton St. in Warren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Parish (St. James Church). Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Warren Family Mission or Trumbull County Animal Welfare League.
