Obituary

Warren - Bessie (Franko) Calipetis Vasilion, 97, passed away Wednesday evening, July 27, 2016 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland with her loving family by her side. Bessie will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends for so many beautiful qualities. Bessie was a woman of pure strength and dedication to her family and friends always giving a helping hand to those in need. She was born March 7, 1919, Yorkville, Ohio the daughter of the Andrew and Angeline (Savapoulos) Franko. Bessie was married to Pete Calipetis in 1939 and moved to Warren, Ohio, where they ran the Pine Street Restaurant. Pete was a proud United States Navy Veteran serving on the USS Sarotoga and was killed in action during World War II on February 21, 1945 and was buried at sea. Bessie remarried Mike Vasilion in January of 1957 who passed away on December 2, 1990. Bessie retired after 42 years of service as a buyer/sales clerk with the J.C. Penny Company and then worked for Toula's Bridal Shop in Boardman until 2003. Bessie was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Warren and St. Johns the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church of Youngstown. She was also member of the Senior Citizens Club, Philoptochos, the Yasou Club, the Lunch Club and the Daughters of Penelope. Bessie had many passions throughout her life. She enjoyed socializing, gardening and most of all spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. Bessie was a proud homemaker and the true matriarch of the family. Her family will miss all her excellent cooking and baking of Greek delicacies especially her famous rice pudding and finikia. Bessie leaves behind to hold onto her precious memories her daughter Angeline "Angie" (Tom Nick) Kalogeras of Warren, two grandchildren Pamela (Don Jr.) Fowler of Howland, Nick (Melissa) Kalogeras of Columbus, four great grandchildren Amanda, Ryan, Anna and Tommy, and a brother Earnest "Taso" Franko of Alliance along with many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husbands, Bessie was preceded in death by three brothers Frank, Tom, and Jim Franko and a sister Irene Vrotsos. Family and friends may call Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Trisagion Service and Saturday from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel 1884 North Rd. NE, Warren, Ohio 44483. There will be a funeral service held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren with Fr. Costantine Valantasis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boardman.
