Warren - Donald Leroy "Gio" Giovannone, 71. of Warren, Ohio passed away November 18, 2014 at his residence. Gio was born February 8, 1943 in Warren, Ohio he was the son of Frank and Ina (Whetstone) Giovannone. He was a graduate of Newton Falls High School class of 1961.Gio served in the United States Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany and worked as a General Supply Specialist. As a youth he was a Boy Scout where he learned all of his outdoor sports skills. His supply specialist job in the Army would be similar to a Quartermaster in the Boy Scouts. While stationed in Germany he met and married Irmgard Hennersdorf and has a daughter Mavis presently living in Germany. Gio retired from Packard Electric in 1993 after 30 years of service. Presently he was a trainer in outdoor safety, hunting and shooting. He loved the outdoors and was preparing for his upcoming West Virginia Trip. Gio was a kind loving person and had a giving heart and would do anything for anyone. He was the person who when you met him, you did not forget him. He had the ability to make you laugh and then make you blush. He was a lifetime member and longtime friend of the YATFS (Youngstown Area Tropical Fish Society). He was known throughout the hobby for his expertise in breeding fresh and saltwater fish as well as propagating aquatic plants and marine corals. He held the title of Grand-Master in both categories. Throughout the years, he served as a valuable Board Member and chaired several committees. Gio was more than willing to lend a helping hand and share his vast knowledge. Gio had a passion for drag racing which he did most of his adult life. Whether it was Quaker City, Meander, Sunset or Thompson raceways he made friends all along the way. He was that kind of guy who was always at the track and willing to help anyone. If you needed a tool, a part or advice on racing, Gio was the first to come to the rescue. He was and will continue to be a great impact on several of the local racers. Gio was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Twin State Auto Racing Club for Drag Racing. He was a member of the Newton Falls Masonic Lodge #462. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Mavis Giovannone-Bechetta of Ravenberg, Germany, and her Mother Irmgard Giovannone-Bechtler of Wiesloch, Germany; his siblings: Evelyn (Joseph) Willforth of Bazetta, Judi (Bart) Gensburg of Lordstown, twin brothers: Timothy Giovannone of Columbia, South Carolina and Thomas Giovannone of Niles, Davis Giovannone of Liberty and Edward Giovannone of Newton Falls, many cousins, nieces and nephews and all the lifelong friends he acquired through the years. He preceded in death by his parents. Family and friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel 1884 North Rd. NE, Warren, Ohio. A Service will be Saturday at Noon at the Funeral Home Minister, Bob Ron Giovannone, of The Church of Jesus Christ, and cousin to Gio will officiate the service. Burial will be in Lordstown Twp. Cemetery. In lieu of lowers material contributions may be made to the family.
