Chagrin Falls - Edward Fire, 78, of Chagrin Falls passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at his residence. He was born December 3, 1936 in Lowellville, Ohio the son of Frank and Pauline Fire. He was a 1954 graduate of Lowellville High School and attended Youngstown State University. Edward served in U.S. Navy shortly after gradation at age 17 in 1954 till 1958. Ed's career as Union Leader, began in 1961 at Packard Electric in Warren, where he served in elected Union Offices for 40 plus years at the local, district and International Union Levels. In 1964 he was elected President of the 13,000 member IUE Local 717 at Delphi Packard and re elected in 1966, 1968, and 1971. He also served as Vice President of the Ohio AFL-CIO. In 1974 he was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the 80,000 member IUE District 7, headquartered in Kettering, OH and reelected in 1976. In 1977 he was elected Chairman of the IUE-General Motors Conference Board in Kettering. Representing IUE Members employed by GM in Dayton, Rochester NY, Warren, OH, New Brunswick, NJ, Clinton, and Brookhaven, Mississippi, Anaheim, CA, and Gadsen Alabama. He participated in IUE-GM National Contract Negotiations with GM in 1967, 1970, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1993,1996, 1999 and 2003. In 1980 he was elected President of IUE District Seven. In 1982 he was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the International Union, IUE AFL-CIO Headquartered in Washington, DC, and was re elected in 1984, 1988 and 1992. In 1996 he was elected the fifth President in the history of the 180,000 member IUE AFL-CIO and re elected in 2000, shortly before the merger of the IUE and the Communications Workers of America (CWA). He also served as Vice President and member of the Executive Council of the National AFL-CIO. He was a labor of love in every aspect of his job to help people have good jobs with good pay. His humanitarian jesters and our precious memories will be remembered by all his friends and family. The highlights of his career included leading the Union's bargaining teams with major corporations, GM, GE, and Delphi. He led IUE'S efforts in the merger with the CWA. He also led the Union's Political action efforts, including being actively involved in the campaigns of Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton as well as Ohio Governor Dick Celeste, Senators John Glenn, Howard Metzenbaum and Sherrod Brown. Edward retired in 2004 and resided in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with his wife Margaret. He is survived by his wife Margaret Fire of Chagrin Falls, three sons Dino (Pamela) Fire of Jenson, MI., Patrick Fire of Myrtle Beach, SC. And Ted (Melissa) Fire of Stow, MA., three granddaughters Morgan, and Lina Fire and Capri (George) Kandris, two grandsons Sam and Jake Fire, a sister Jeanette Farley of Warren and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles Fire and four sisters Margaret Fire, Ida Marino, Rosemarie Whalen and Ann Fire. Family and friends may call Monday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel 1884 North Rd. NE, Warren, Ohio and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church 131 E Wood St. Lowellville, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church with Rev. John Jerek officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
