Elmer T. Sabo, 84, of Warren, passed away at 5:37 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland under the care of Hospice of the Valley with his wife Della at his side.
Elmer was born on October 14, 1930 in Hubbard the son of the late Frank and Juliana (Kovach) Sabo and was a 1948 graduate of Hubbard High School.
Elmer went on to graduate in 1953 from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a registered Professional Engineer and held a Surveyors license with the State of Ohio. He belonged to the Society of Professional Engineers and the Speakers Bureau of Packard Electric. Elmer worked for over 33 years for the Packard Electric as an engineer in many divisions and retired in December 1988 as a Production Engineering Superintendent in the Tool & Die Plant.
Elmer was a veteran of the United States Army and attended the Ordinance School for Officers in Aberdeen, MD and became a commissioned officer. He served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on June 6, 1955 as a 1st Lieutenant and would remain in the Army Reserves until being honorably discharged on July 30, 1961.
Elmer was a longtime and active member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish) where he served as Chairman and President of the Finance Committee and Heritage Fund, head usher at the 4:00 p.m. Mass; member and ticker seller of the Sts. Cyril & Methodius 300 Club, and was a member of the St. Cyril & Methodius Men's Club and 50 + Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 620 in Warren. After retiring, Elmer enjoyed traveling and volunteer work. Elmer had especially enjoyed his last 37 years "Living One Day at a Time".
Elmer is survived by his wife and best friend of over 59 years the former Della DesRoches, whom he married on April 23, 1955. He is also survived by three nephews Robert (Maggie) Sabo of Salem, Joseph "Joey" Anthony (Linda) Sabo of Westerville and Stephen Sabo of Westerville and a niece Mary Ann (Jeff) Ott of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Besides his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by a brothers Frank Sabo Jr. and Joseph Sabo; a sister Julia Sabo and a nephew Ronald Sabo.
Calling hours will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish-Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church, 1234 High St. NE, Warren, Ohio 44483, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, with Fr. James P. Walker officiating, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the church.
Entombment will follow in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland with full military honors rendered by the Trumbull County Honor Guard.
Della would like to offer special thanks to all of the care givers and employees of Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, where Elmer spent his last 7 ½ months also to Pastor Jim, the chaplain at Shepherd of the Valley for all of the spiritual support he showed to Elmer and to Hospice of the Valley for the care they gave to Elmer in making his last days peaceful and finally to all of the "Guardian Angels" and good friends for their visits and all of their prayers.
The family suggests the memorial contributions be made in Elmer's name to the Heritage Fund of the church.
