On September 27, 2026, George Alex Geordan, loving husband, father, and grandfather, fell asleep in the arms of the Lord, surrounded by his family, whom he loved, at the age of 95.

George was born on June 1, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Alexis and Fannie Geordan. George lived his entire life in or around his hometown of Warren, Ohio. George’s life was a tribute to service. From an early age, the center of his life was his family, his beloved church, St. Demetrios, and education.

After graduating from Warren G. Harding High School in January 1950, George attended and graduated from Youngstown College (now YSU) with a bachelor’s degree in education and from Westminster College with a master’s degree in education. During his youth, George could be found working at his family’s grocery store. He watched with awe as his father would help those in need by giving extra items to those who were struggling. That example stayed with George, as giving back was always so important to him.

George met the love of his life, Ethel Faklis, at Youngstown College. Not even a tour in the United States Army could keep them apart. Upon George’s return from Germany, they married and have enjoyed 68 wonderful years together.

George had a very successful 35 years as an educator. He began teaching with the Warren City Schools, and then in the LaBrae Local Schools. In his tenure at LaBrae, he served as a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, and ultimately rose to the role of superintendent.

George was an avid sports enthusiast. There wasn’t a fall weekend that you couldn’t find him watching his alma mater, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Cleveland Browns. Winter meant enjoying the Boston Celtics. Spring and summer found him either listening to or watching his beloved Cleveland Indians. George was a voracious reader, and you could always find him carrying around a book or crossword puzzle to tackle.

George got his love of baseball from his father, Alexis, who sponsored many baseball teams at Perkins Park during George’s youth. George also managed many of his son Alex’s baseball teams and never missed watching all three of his grandchildren playing baseball and softball. He dedicated many years to youth sports in the Trumbull County area. He wanted all children to have that same opportunity to enjoy baseball and softball, so, for many years, he served on the Trumbull County Hot Stove Board. He was honored and humbled to be remembered in their Hall of Fame.

George loved his home church, St. Demetrios, spending many years singing and even directing the church’s choir. He enjoyed being a part of the church’s Greek school committee, scholarship committee, elevator committee, and Sunday school, as well as working at the church’s annual festival. George also served on the church board and was a member of the Yasou and Senior Citizens’ groups at the church.

His two children, Nita (Bruce) Hendryx and Alex (Renee) Geordan, will miss him terribly. He will also be missed by his three grandchildren, Nicolas Hendryx, Dr. Nathan (Dr. Michaela) Hendryx, and Arianna (Adam Wibert) Geordan. They will all affirm that their Papou was “their buddy” and that he lived a wonderful life. He is also survived by his two sisters, Helen Dontis of Athens, Greece, and Mary Genkos of Glendale, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Sophia Geordan, brothers-in-law John Dontis and Tom Genkos, and niece Lisa Genkos.

Family and friends may call Thursday, October 1, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, with Father Constantine Valantasis officiating. A private family only burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in George’s name be made to the St. Demetrios Scholarship Fund, 429 High Street, Warren, Ohio 44481.
