George D.
Valtas
May 5, 1941 – March 21, 2017
Warren - George D. Valtas was born in Pelion, Greece during World War II in 1941, the youngest son of Dimocritos & Eugenia Valtas. At the time, resources in Greece were scarce as a consequence of the war when the country was under German occupation. From a young age George was determined to help his family live a better life. A man with many talents yet modest means and only an elementary level education, George could acquire any skill he set his mind to, including making his own guitar from scratch, photography and mastering foreign languages. George set off from his village to serve for the Greek Army and subsequently worked aboard merchant ships for a decade, where he traveled the world and enjoyed many adventures while sending funds home to support his parents in Greece. In hopes to pursue the American dream, he joined the NATO forces and served for the U.S. foreign service during the Vietnam War. He later relocated to New York City and settled in Ohio when he landed work at General Motors and married his loving wife and soul mate, Sandra. In order to maximize time with his family, George and Sandra established their own carpentry business and raised their five children with unconditional love. George was a humble man whose world travels and upbringing influenced his outlook on life – he was compassionate about helping others and often did so anonymously. George was proud to be a naturalized U.S. Citizen and was deeply patriotic. He was passionate about family, helping those in need, cooking, and world history.
George is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years (Sandra), 5 children (Clara, Evgenia, Vivian, Demetra, Dimos), 8 grandchildren, sister and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family request to offer anonymous support to those in need, especially children and the elderly, which is the best way to honor him and what he was best known for.
Arrangements handled by the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel 1884 North Rd. NE, Warren, Ohio 44483.
