Howland - Gust Michelakis, 85, passed away Wednesday, January 07, 2015 following a brief battle with cancer. He was born December 27, 1929 in Warren, Ohio, the son of the late Nicholas and Anna Michelakis. Gust was a 1948 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. After serving in the US Army he worked at Van Huffel Steel before starting his 35 year career with Allstate Insurance. He retired from Allstate in 1993. Later he purchased and ran R-Cigar in Cortland where he loved his time talking to his loyal customers. Gust was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren where he served many years on the board and devoted countless hours to many fund raising events, especially the annual festival where he served as chairman for years and a member of the AHEPA for years as well. He enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes football games regularly and even watched the Buckeyes victory over Alabama New Year's day from his hospital bed. Gust is survived by his loving, incredible wife of sixty years Sue Michelakis, two sons Michael (Beth) of Ocean Isle, NC, and Tony (Laura) Michelakis of Southport, NC, and a daughter Debbie (Scott) Miller of Cortland, OH, seven grandchildren Justin, Lauren, Alex, Gabriela, Madison, Lilly and Carly whom he loved dearly, and a sister Kathryn (Pete) Leftheris of Warren. Gust was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Michael, John, Christ and Emmanuel Michelakis, and a sister Koula Skarlis. Family and friends may call Friday from 4 :00 to 6:00 p.m. with a 5:00 p.m. Trisagion Service and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel. A Service will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Constantine Valantasis officiating. Burial will be in Howland Twp. Cemetery.
