Obituary

Howland - Dr. Joseph Ucchino, 86, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Intermountain Medical Center in Utah. Dr. Ucchino (Doc) was born January 2, 1928 in Greenville, Pennsylvania to Michael and Amelia Ucchino. He served in the United States Army during World War II then attended Thiel College in Greenville, graduating with a Bachelor in Science in 1950. He attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery graduating in 1955. Dr. Ucchino interned at Graneville Hospital in Dayton, Ohio and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in 1958. He was certified by the American College of Osteopathic Anesthesiologists in 1964. Dr. Ucchino served on the Board of Governors and was a past president of the American College of Osteopathic Anesthesiology. He was honored as a Fellow and receiving their Liftime Achievement award in 2008. Dr. Ucchino was on the original medical staff of Warren General Hospital, now known as St. Joseph's Hospital, and worked there for over thirty years. Doc was an avid outdoorsman and he and his family spent many family vacations together in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Ucchino family enjoyed many hours hiking, fishing, camping and hunting in and around the Porcupine Mountains State Park. He is survived by his daughters Renee (Chris) Burkley of Heber, Utah; Janine (Chris Tjaden) Ucchino of Omaha, Nebraska; son Jeffrey (Jennifer) Ucchino of Indianapolis, Indiana; and grandchildren Keenen and Zachary Burkley; Natalie, Sean and Charlotte Tjaden; Hannah, Graham, Hailey and Mitchell Ucchino. He is also servived by his sister, Mary Finnocchio of Brayn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Dr. Ucchino was preceded in death by his parents, wife June Ucchino, son Craig Ucchino, brother Dominic Ucchino and sisters Jeanne Stevenson and Roseanne Alexander. Family and friends may call Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel in Warren and Friday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert Church in Cortland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert Church with Rev. Carl Kish officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations to be sent to Friends of the Porkies, P.O. Box 221, Ontonagon, MI, 49953.
