Obituary

Howland - Dr. LeRoy V. Hoffman passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014, at Hospice of the Valley following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 16, 1927 in Frederichtown, PA., the son of William and Regina Brandtonies Hoffman. He graduated in 1945 from East Bethlehem High School where he was a division All Star Athlete in Basketball. A two year stint in the U.S. Army precluded his utilizing a scholarship at Westminster Collage. Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Pittsburgh and went on to attain his Doctor of Dental Surgery Decree. On September 11, 1948 he married Olga. They moved to Youngstown in 1956, where he completed a year's internship with the Youngstown Hospital Association. The couple moved to Warren in 1957 where he became active in his Dental Practice and many civic and social activities. In past years he was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, St. Mary's Social and Service Club, Buckeye Club and the Trumbull Country Club. He was chairman of the March of Dimes and was active with Mobile Meals, and served on the Blessed Sacrament Finance Committee. He was a member of the Corydon Palmer Dental Society, Ohio Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He also served as President of the Warren Dental Society. His interests were primarily enjoying his family and friends, tennis, golf, reading and traveling. He was an enthusiastic fan of most spectator sports, but especially so of the Pitt Panthers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns football. He loved playing cards, especially bridge. He retired from his Dental Practice in 1998 after 44 active years and missed it and his patients, but also made the most of his leisure time. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter and four grandchildren: Bill (Lauren) Hoffman with Justin and Nicole of Charleston, Sc, Preston (Lorraine) Hoffman of Boston, MA; and Christie (Brian) Talbert with Davis and Hayden of Pleasanton, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings; Mary Hoffman, Ralph Hoffman, Bill Hoffman, Anna Skehan, Evelyn Marks, Jean Slosarik, Bernice Burke and Ray Hoffman. Family and friends may call Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Rd. NE, Warren. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church with Thomas J. McCarthy officiating. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Shepherd of the Valley Home Health Care Staff and to the Medical Staff at Hospice House in Youngstown, for their kind and caring treatment.
