Obituary

Maria Chimbidis, MA, NCC, MSW, 91, of Warren, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley in Liberty.

Maria was born in Warren, Ohio, a daughter of the late Euripidis and Argiro (Kantounis) Chimbidis. From an early age, Maria demonstrated a strong work ethic, working alongside her family at their family business, the Warren Meat Market. She was a proud 1954 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and went on to accomplish remarkable things in life.

A true trailblazer for women of her generation, Maria continued her education at Youngstown College, where she earned her bachelor's degree, before obtaining her master's degree in social work from Kent State University. She dedicated her professional life to helping families in crisis and individuals struggling with addiction finding hope, healing, and a path toward recovery. Beginning with the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, then moving to private practice and retiring from Valley Counseling, Maria approached her work with an unwavering belief in the dignity and potential of every person.

For Maria, social work was far more than a career; it was a calling that reflected the very heart of who she was. Even after retirement, she continued to advocate for those in need through her service on the board of the Salvation Army. One of the greatest rewards of her life's work came when former clients reached out to thank her for the lasting, positive difference she had made in their lives. Those heartfelt expressions of gratitude were a testament to the compassion, encouragement, and steadfast support she offered to so many throughout the years.

Maria's dedication to serving others was deeply rooted in her Greek Orthodox faith, which guided her life and inspired her many acts of kindness. A lifelong member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, she was especially known for accompanying Fr. Costa on visits to hospitals and the homes of parishioners, bringing comfort, prayer, and companionship to those who were ill or unable to attend church. Her service to her parish extended into nearly every aspect of church life. Maria made history as the first woman to serve on the parish council at St. Demetrios and was also the first woman president of the Pan-Icarian Society. She additionally served as president of the Philoptochos Society, was a proud Daughter of Penelope through AHEPA and helped found the Hellenic University Club alongside Dr. Costa Sarantopoulos. Through each of these roles, Maria helped pave the way for other women while strengthening the faith, fellowship, and traditions of the communities she cherished.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and extensive service, Maria was an avid reader and a formidable word-puzzle solver, always ready to challenge her mind with a new book or puzzle. Yet, it was her generous heart and her genuine concern for others that left the deepest impression on those who knew her. Maria was a loving friend to all, but she held a special place in her heart for those whose voices were too often unheard. She believed in standing up for the vulnerable, advocating for those who needed someone in their corner, and offering kindness without judgment.

Maria's life was a beautiful example of faith put into action. Her laughter and sense of humor will deeply missed by all, but her remarkable spirit of service and love will never be forgotten.

Maria is survived by her sister, JoAnne Hovanic of Salem, and beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will cherish her memory.

Besides her parents, Maria was preceded in death by her brothers, Phillip (Antonia) Chimbidis and Louis (Lois) Chimbidis, and her sister, Bessie (Mike) Boyazis.
