Marion Therese Anderson, 98, formerly of Cortland and Warren, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, November 2, 2026, at the Inn at Christine Valley in Youngstown, surrounded by the comfort of those who cared for her.
Marion was born on November 14, 1927, in Cleveland, a daughter of Joseph and Margaret (McDermott) Owens. Marion graduated from Lakewood, Ohio, High School before earning her registered nursing degree. Later she went back to school to earn her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Youngstown State University in 1975.
She was a nurse at the Student Health Center at Ohio University, when she met the love of her life, John H. “Andy” Anderson. The two were united in marriage on July 12, 1951. This past summer, Marion and Andy joyfully celebrated an extraordinary 75 years of marriage, a beautiful testament to a lifetime of love, devotion, partnership, and cherished memories. Festivities included a party sponsored by the staff of the Inn at Christine Valley. Well-wishers consisted of residents, staff and family. Their story appeared in the Tribune Chronicle and Vindicator and on Channel 21.
After starting their family, Marion put her nursing career on hold to devote herself to being a full-time homemaker. In the 1960s, she returned to the profession she loved, continuing her compassionate service as a nurse at St. Joseph Riverside Hospital in Warren. She later served as a school nurse for the Warren City School District before completing her career at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where she eventually retired.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marion's Catholic faith was an important part of who she was. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Pius X Church in Warren and most recently at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Cortland, where her faith provided a source of strength, comfort, and guidance throughout her life. Her activities at the churches included serving as a Eucharistic minister.
Marion, Andy and their three children especially enjoyed “getting their swimming in” on vacations to such places as Geneva-on-the-Lake; Ocracoke Island, North Carolina; and several locations in Florida and Canada. Later they enjoyed their camping trailers. Marion and Andy also were fond of playing cards with their friends and bowling in mixed leagues.
Pets of all kinds were a major part of the family. Throughout the years they had dogs, cats, parakeets, tropical fish, and a turtle that grew to eight inches in diameter. Their dogs were well-known as the most-spoiled in the neighborhood.
In retirement, Marion’s volunteer work included a return to St. Joseph’s Hospital in the gift shop. She and Andy enjoyed square dancing and traveling, especially with Elder Hostel. They spent many winters at their vacation home in Bonita Springs, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, Andy; three children: Thomas (Cathleen) Anderson of Boardman; Peggy (Brennan) Foster of Durham, North Carolina; and Charles (Ann) of Naples, Florida; four grandchildren: Melissa Fox-Michel (Roger) of Beverly Hills, Florida; Ryan Anderson of Orlando, Florida; Sarah (Ronald) Berner of Deland, Florida; and Elizabeth Anderson of Chicago.
Preceding her in death were her sister Catherine McKinney and her brother Edward Owens.
Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Marion on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 9 to 10:30 am at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE.
A Funeral Mass will follow on Saturday at 11 am at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4659 OH-46, Cortland, OH 44410.
