Michael "Mike"
Axiotis
October 20, 1926 – May 7, 2013
Mike Vasile Axiotis 1926-2013 Mike Vasile Axiotis, 86, fell asleep in the Lord Tuesday morning, May 7, 2013. He was born in the village of Spartounda on the island of Chios, Greece on October 20, 1926 the son of the late Vasilios and Paraskevi Axiotis. He served in the Greek Army during World War II and the Greek Civil War. His fondest memories of his early life were the four years he spent in Cyprus with his family. He immigrated to Warren, Ohio on March 21, 1955 where he first worked for his beloved Uncle George Axiotis at The Big A in downtown Warren. He returned to Chios to marry the only woman he ever loved, Irene, in the village of Viki on August 21, 1966. Mike and Irene raised their two children, Vivian and Bill, in Howland, Ohio, and he taught his children "family first" through his example. He was a proud member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and of the Chios Society "Agia Markella." Though he spent 30 years as a steelworker for Van Huffel Tube Corporation and retired in 1984, the greatest job "Ike" ever had was the sixteen years he spent beside his son at The Mocha House. He enjoyed gardening, talking politics, and sneaking candy and gumballs to his grandchildren. He loved his country and would often be heard saying "God bless America." He is survived by his wife Irene Axiotis; his children Vivian (Steven) McGarrity and Bill (Kitsa) Axiotis; his grandchildren Arianne, Kayla, and Eleni Axiotis, and Sophia and Michael McGarrity; his brother Terry (Dorothy) Axiotis; and many nieces and nephews as well as family in Greece. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Manuel Axiotis, and sisters Katie "Koula" Hionas and Mary Papadakis. Family and friends may call Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. Trisagion Service and Friday from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel in Warren. Service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Constantine Valantasis officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. Warren, Ohio 44481.
