Howland - Surrounded by his family,Palmer J. "Barney" Macali 93, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Hospice of the Valley in Boardman. He was born May 1, 1921 in Niles, Ohio the son of the late Ralph and Angeline (Scarnecchia) Macali. He was a 1939 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. Barney began his working life at the age of 10 delivering groceries after school and continued in that busisness for more than 80 years. From 1942 through 1945, he served in the United States Air Force assigned to the 5th Air Depot Group stationed in England. He dedicated his life to serving his family, friends, employees, customers and the communities where he worked. An extremely active member of the community, Barney was a member of numerous organizations and received many distinguished awards. He served on the Board of Directors of Security Dollar Bank for 27 years, was Past president of the Ohio Retail Food Dealers, Youngstown Area Grocery Association, Niles Kiwanis Club, Niles Football Boosters Club, and Niles Community Corp. He was a director of the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Mahoning Valley Easter Seal Society and a board member of the Warren Sports Hall of Fame. An avid golfer, he organized the Youngstown Area Grocers Association golf outing. Successful as a fundraiser his acitivities in this field include the fundraising drive for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital expansion, co-chairman of a fund drive for the Niles Area Y.M.C.A, chairman of the fund drive for the Band Shell at Bo Rein Stadium. and co-chairmanship of the fundraising committee whose efforts resulted in the construction of the North Rhodes Avenue Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School building. He underwrote the first Niles McKinley Science Fair. Barney recently received the Community Star from the Tribune Chronicle for outstanding service in the community. He is survived by his wife Anne Macali whom he married February 14, 1955, four children Ralph (Karen) Macali of Warren, Paula Macali of Tucson, AZ., Palmer "PJ" (Renee) Macali, Jr. of Girard, Mary Beth (Ken) Hartling of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA., and Hannelore Kaldun -Oehler, their AFS student, of Frankfurt, Germany, eight grandchildren, Christopher (Natalie), Quinn, Tyler, Marco, Nina and Nicholas Macali, Spencer and Anneliese Hartling, two sisters, Eleanor Hackett and Norma Entler and sister-in- law Delores Macali, all of Niles He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Armand and Gilbert Macali. Family & Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Monday from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel in Warren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Niles.
