Stanley V. Kook, 93, of Cortland, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Windsor House at Champion.
Born on December 30, 1920 in Warren, Stanley was one of nine children born to the late John and Mary (Tymchuck) Kook and was a 1938 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.
Stanley retired in 1980 from Republic Steel after working for 30 years as a coiler in 56 Inch Hot Strip Mill.
A Veteran of the United States Army, Stanley served his country as a Sergeant during World War II in the American Theater with the 554th AAF Base Unit. For his service to his country, Stanley was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. His was honorably discharged on November 24, 1945.
Stanley was a member of Blessed John Paul II Parish in Warren. He was currently a member the Knights of Columbus Council 620 and held office of Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree and was named honorary member in 2001.
He was an avid bowler and belonged to the Thursday Night Republic League at Crest Lanes. He was also an avid fisherman, loved gardening, was a Cleveland Indians fan and especially enjoyed supporting his grandchildren in all of their sporting events by being their number one fan.
Stanley was married on November 16, 1943 to the former Mary S. Suces and they were married for 65 years until her passing on August 27, 2009.
Stanley is survived by four children Maryann (Robert) McCarthy of Fallston, MD; Robert S. (Beverly) Kook of Warren; Debra Brown of Warren and Linda (Daniel) Simmons of Warren; a sister Rosie (Joe) Gerchak of Howland; fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Besides his wife and parents, Stanley was preceded in death by a daughter Jeanette Bringardner; a son-in-law Eugene Brown; two sisters Ann Strohmeyer and Helen Bogolin; and five brothers John, Frank, Walter, Joe and Tony Kook.
Calling hours will take place on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Sinchak & Sons Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2014 in Blessed John Paul II Parish with Fr. Christopher Henyk officiating, preceded by closing prayers to be said at 9:20 a.m. in the funeral home prior in leaving for the church.
Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Champion.
The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations in Stanley's name to Hospice of the Valley.
