Boardman - Tula D. (Eliades) Tzagournis, 93, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, June 3, with her family at her side.
Tula was born April 17, 1933, in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Diogenes “Dan” and Eleni (Gaitanou) Eliades. She was a 1951 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. Tula attended Youngstown State University for secretarial and bookkeeping courses. She also had the opportunity to attend the Conover Modeling School in New York City for a year while she worked for the Bridgeport Brass Company. Upon her return to Warren, she worked at the Warren Tribune Chronicle, and as an office manager for a private medical practice.
Tula met her husband of 59 years, Atty. George A. Tzagournis, at the iconic Avon Lake dance pavilion. They were married August 30, 1964 in Warren, Ohio at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Tula had her first child, Helena, in 1965 and her son, Adam, in 1972. Tula was a great support to her husband, his law practice, and their Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips franchise. She involved herself whole-heartedly in Easter Seals, and the Women’s Auxiliary to the Mahoning County Bar Association. She was a dedicated mother to her children, and a humble servant to Saint John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman, where she served with the Three Hierarchs Chapter of the Philoptochos Society for decades. She also baked for the church festivals. Both Tula and George were proud of their Greek culture and maintained membership and involvement in the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and were founding members of the Peroulakis/Theodorakis Chapter of the Pancretan Association of America.
Tula leaves behind an older brother, Nick (Angie) Eliades, of Arizona; her daughter, Helena Tzagournis (Dr. Brett Wheeler); her son, Adam (Agapi) Tzagournis; three grandchildren, Audrey Wheeler Hopkins (Gregory), Samuel Wheeler (Shea), Dialechti Tzagournis; and a great-grandchild, William George Hopkins. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, and family throughout the United States and Greece.
Tula was preceded in death by her parents Diogenes and Eleni Eliades; her husband Atty. George A. Tzagournis; and a brother Constantine Eliades.
