Catherine Jean “Cathy” Mines, 89, of Warren, died unexpectedly on February 3, 2026, following a stroke two days earlier.
She was born April 2, 1936, in Wickhaven, Pennsylvania, the third of eight children of Albert and Helen (Yachup) Pagesh.
She grew up during the Depression in a coal-mining town, in a home that relied on an outdoor water pump, and carried the lessons of thrift, endurance, and hard work with her throughout her life. She graduated from Perry Township High School in 1954.
After graduation, she followed her older sister Mary to Warren, Ohio, where jobs were more plentiful. She worked at Trumbull Lamp, stamping light bulbs. At some point she also worked as a waitress at Risher’s Dairy, where she met Lewis Mines. They were married in July 1957 and shared more than 50 years together until his death in 2010.
Cathy was creative and artistic, with a lifelong love of painting in oils, watercolors, and other media, as well as playing the piano and improvising songs. She found particular joy in teaching art and piano to her grandchildren and to children at her church school. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. A loyal Cleveland Indians fan, she took pleasure in simple routines such as sitting on the porch swing with a cup of tea, enjoying the fresh air and the sound of the rain.
Her Catholic faith was central to her life. She often credited her love of God, the Mass, and the rosary with sustaining her through difficult times and believed they were key to her long life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Mines; a daughter, Charlotte Rockar; her brother, David Pagesh; a sister, Eileen Mognet; and one great-grandchild.
She is survived by sisters Mary Arredondo, Christine Ucman, Helen Morris, Teresa Galbraith, and Linda Pagesh; children Christine Mines of Boulder, Colorado; Martin (Roxanne) Mines of Warren, Ohio; Tracey (Mike) Ronzi of Walton, Kentucky; and Kirk (Paula) Mines of North Jackson, Ohio. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
