Howland - Hildegard Wilfer, a cherished mother, wife, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 31, 2025 at her home in Howland.
Born on February 19, 1932, in Eichendorf Kreis Johannesburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Friedrich and Berta Treschan. Hildegard’s life was a testament to the strength and love that characterized her 93 years.
She often recalled working side by side with her father on the farm in Germany and surviving World War II with her parents and siblings, but also losing a brother, Emil, in battle and a baby sister in fleeing. Hildegard later worked in the German sewing factories. She was a talented seamstress.
Hildegard met her husband Joseph around this time and they were married February 8, 1954. Soon after, the Treschan family, along with Hildegard and her husband Joseph, migrated to the U. S.. Hildegard and Joseph shared their lives for nearly 68 years before his passing on 8/23/2021.
Hildegard enjoyed flowers and gardening and she meticulously took care of the house and lawn. She was an excellent cook and baker. Beautiful and delicious homemade birthday cakes were the highlight of birthday celebrations for her children and grandchildren.
Hildegard admired beautiful clothes, and sewed often for herself and daughters. She always looked her best and did her best and encouraged her children to do the same. She was fun loving and liked to tease a little. Hildegard loved to dance. Her and her husband were impressive on the dance floor.
Hildegard leaves behind a legacy of love and memories with her 6 children, Hedi Lohr, Cindy Wilfer, Sheila Wilfer, Robert (Heidi) Wilfer, Ronny Wilfer, and Gary (Cindy) Wilfer. 5 Grandchildren Jennings (Jamie) Lohr, Eric (Missy) Lohr, Courtney (Zach) Fleeman, Justin (Mary) Wilfer, and Mitchell Wilfer. 5 Great Grandchildren.
3 sisters, Liesbeth, Adelheid, Ruth, and a brother Helmut, all in N. Carolina.
Her departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by those who loved her. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hildegard’s caregiver, her daughter Sheila Wilfer, who provided her mother and father with care, companionship and love in their aging years.
Hildegard’s life was one of purpose, love and joy. She will be remembered as a woman who cherished her family and left the world a better place. Rest in peace Hildegard, your song will forever echo in our hearts.
Arrangements are being made with Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel in Warren, Ohio. There will be no services at this time. Hildegard will be laid to rest beside her husband at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland, Ohio.
