Champion – Joseph Robert “Joe” Kusmierek Jr., 78, of Champion, passed away unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, February 23, 2024.

He was born July 10, 1945, in Sutersville, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Robert Sr. and Freda (Kapelar) Kusmierek.

Joe was a 1963 graduate of Kittanning High School and began his career in the coal mines. Joe heard the call of his country and on August 30, 1965, he enlisted in United States Army where proudly served our country during the Vietnam War. Upon finishing basic training, Joe was stationed for 2 years at Oakdale, Pennsylvania and then served overseas in Central Highlands, Pleiku Vietnam. His military occupation was a courrier, and he received the following decorations: the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Sharpshooter Rifle, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Marksman Medal and 1 Overseas Service Bar. Joe received an Honorable Discharge on June 22, 1968.

Upon returning stateside, Joe re-entered the workforce in the coal mines and then accepted a position in skill trades with General Motors, Lordstown in the Fab Plant for over 36 years until his retirement on January 1, 2007. While being employed with General Motors, Joe was on the fire brigade and on the safety committee.  

Joe was an active member of St. William Catholic Church, where he was a founder and instrumental for their Knights of Columbus Council 7491 along with volunteering for many parish activities. He also was a member of the VFW Post 6555 in Sagamore, Pennsylvania.

Joe true passion was spending time with his family. He loved being a husband, dad, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was always so proud of his daughters and never missed any of their activities nor his grandchildren’s activities. He also enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing, gardening, and mowing the yard. He was known as “Mr. Fix It” because there was no task to big or small for him to handle. Joe’s legacy will live on and always be remembered for his generosity, compassion and kindness.  

Joe leaves behind to hold onto his precious memories the love of his life, his wife of over 57 years the former Karen Gulish whom he married on December 10, 1966, two daughters Theresa McKnight of Warren and Jennifer Kusmierek of Champion, his grandchildren who were the apple of his eye and called him Pappy, Jessica McKnight and Joseph M. Kusmierek, his beloved two great grandchildren Michael and Emma and his sister Karen Kress of Meadville, Pennsylvania along with cousins and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.  

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Joseph on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE, Warren.

There will be additional calling hours on Thursday morning, February 29, 2024, at St. William Catholic Church, 5411 Mahoning Ave NW, Warren from 10:00 am until 10:50 am with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 am.

Entombment will follow at All Souls Cemetery, Bazetta with military honors provided by the great men of the Trumbull County American Legion. Taps will be played by Gary Watson, his former neighbor.
