Youngstown – Joseph John Petrunia, 94, formerly of Warren passed away on Tuesday afternoon, January 7, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Joe was born on March 2, 1930 in Detroit, MI, the first child of Joseph and Anne (Zubrick) Petrunia.
Joe was a 1948 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business management from Kent State University.
In 1952, Joe entered the service of the United States Army. Serving during the Korean War, Joe earned the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, The United Nations Service Medal, The National Defense Medal and an honorable discharge.
Upon returning home and finishing his degree, he then held a variety of jobs: stockbroker, bank manager and later became the owner and operator of convenience stores.
Outside of work, Joe enjoyed reading, writing, traveling and solving crossword puzzles. He was adventurous and was always ready to play the next game. Joe cherished time spent with his friends and family, especially his regular weekly golf games. He frequently thought of others, especially when it came to remembering birthdays and important dates about friends and family. Joe was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Joyce, and deeply loved and appreciated her presence. She was “the wind in his sails” and they are together again.
Joe will always be remembered by his sons, Mark (Lisa) Petrunia of Pittsburgh and Brian (Catherine) Petrunia of Canfield; grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Nicholas, William and David Petrunia; sister, Marian (Paul) Nalepa of Parkman, OH and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (McGinty) Petrunia and four brothers, Robert, Donald, David and John Petrunia.
Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Joe on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren.
There will be a funeral mass on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 11am at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish – St. James Church Site, 2532 Burton St. SE Warren, OH 44484. All guests are asked to MEET AT THE CHURCH.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe’s name to Shepherd of the Valley in Poland Ohio.
