Katherine J. Bakeris (baptized Katina), age 96, born October 28, 1928, passed softly on April 5, 2025.
In 1926, her parents left their large families from Peloponnese, Greece embarking on a month long cross-Atlantic journey to Ellis Island, NY and accepting work in Warren, OH.
Alongside the Warren Greek immigrants, they were founding members of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church, which listed her father’s name on the vestibule icon.
Katherine graduated from Warren G Harding high school and began an administrative career. During her youth, she modeled in Warren and Florida returning to Boardman, OH as an award-winning John Hancock Insurance agent for many years.
She shared her mother’s artistry for her incredible needlepoints, crocheting, and designing beautiful arrangements with immense precision along with their love of gardening. Inheriting her mother’s blonde hair and her father’s green eyes, she dressed impeccably joining family at Sunday dinners with her famous “Jello” desserts.
Family enjoyed weekend visits with her and her cherished pets, a cockatiel which spoke Greek, parakeets, her beloved Schnauzer, and persian and siamese cats. Fr. Costa shared that only a beautiful soul connects purely with animals as easily as Katherine did.
