Warren – Mary S. Hilas, 89, of Howland passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at
University Hospitals of Cleveland surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on December 17, 1934, in Weirton, WV, a daughter of Constantino and
Stamatia “Stella” (Pappas) Soffos.
When Mary was just three years old, the family moved to Warren, where Mary graduated
from Warren G. Harding High School. She went on to work for Packard Electric, where
she retired as a Methods Lab Operator.
Outside of work, Mary was a proud homemaker and enjoyed reading romance novels.
She was an excellent cook and took pride in preparing meals for all the family gatherings.
Mary also enjoyed travelling to Greece every summer with her husband after his
retirement. Mary was a lifelong parishioner of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in
Warren. She was a member of the Pan Rhodian Society and a member and past president
of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Chios Society.
Mary was a loving wife, mother, yiayia, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by all
who knew and loved her.
Mary will always be remembered by her husband of 69 years, John M. Hilas; daughters,
Vivian (Christ) Zoumas, and Estelle Hilas; grandchildren, Angelo (Amy) Zoumas and
Anna Zoumas; great grandson, Christian Zoumas, all of Howland; brothers, Zane (Cathy)
Soffos and Jimmy (Kae) Soffos of Warren; brothers-in-law, Nick (Kalliopi) Hilas and Eli
(Sandy) Hilas of Warren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael and George
Soffos and brothers-in-law, Vasili “Bill” and Kosta “Gust” Hilas.
Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Mary on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from
3 to 5pm at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE, and again on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 10:30 to 11am at St. Demetrios Greek
Orthodox Church, 429 High St NE, Warren, OH 44481.
A Funeral Liturgy will follow at the church on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 11am with
Rev. Constantine Valantasis presiding.
Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary’s name to St. Demetrios Greek
Orthodox Church, 429 High St NE, Warren, OH 44481, OR to the Hilas family to be used towards the repair of the altar at Panaghia Despina Church in Kambia, Chios, Greece.
