Warren - Richard "Rick" Lewis King Sr. passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 3, 2024.
Rick was born on June 9, 1954, to Andrew and Sue A. King.
Rick was a 1972 graduate of Newton Falls High School and went on to Miami University and earned a degree in secondary math education. He ran track for 2 seasons and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and served as the fraternity Athletic Director.
In the fall of 1976, Rick was hired by the Howland School System. Rick taught math and drivers education at Howland High School. He coached football, basketball, and track there. In 1981, he coached the Tigers against the Boardman Spartans led by Bernie Kosar, something he was very proud of. He earned his Master’s Degree at Westminster College and was a guidance counselor for the Howland School System. Later he served as the high school Activities Director. Under his leadership, teams earned 24 championships. Rick served as an officer for the Howland Classroom Teachers association for 22 years and on several NEOEA regional and OEA state committees. He received the OEA Local Treasurer of the Year Award multiple times. He earned two National Science Foundation Grant Awards. He served on the City of Warren Park and Recreation Review Committee.
He also coached football for the Lakeview Bulldogs. He continued his football coaching career at McDonald High School and coached in their 1994 state championship game.
After retiring, he became the Commissioner of the All-American Conference where he helped develop their constitution and by-laws. Rick was currently serving as an advisor to the AAC.
He was inducted into the Youngstown Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Class of 2019.
Rick was a people person with many strengths. He was organized, a problem solver, skilled in budget and facility management; and he understood the rules and regulations in all of his pursuits. Rick loved professional, college, and local sports, following them all passionately.
Outside of work, Rick was a longtime parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church. He served on the church council, as an usher, reader, CDC Instructor, Security Council Member and Men’s Group Member.
Rick will always be remembered by his wife of 32 years, Susan (Uitto) King; His brother, Terry (Sheryl) King, nephews Joshua, Justin, and Jacob King. Aunt Marjorie Simon and cousins Paul and Cheryl Simon. Sister-in-law Peggy (Scott) Dobos, brother-in-law Chuck (Denise) Uitto. Stepchildren James Capellas, Carl (Maureen) Capellas and Mary Capellas (Andrew Brown). His loving grandchildren Zacharias, Clare, Eleanor, Sylvia and Gregory as well as many beloved friends.
Besides his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his sister, Carol King and his son, Rick King Jr.
Staying true to Rick’s dedication towards education and helping others, he has donated his body for medical research.
Family and friends may visit and pay respects to Rick’s family from 10 to 11am on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 3020 Reeves Rd NE Warren, Ohio 44483.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Rick’s name on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 11am with Rev. Christopher Cicero presiding.
At a later date, his urn will be buried in St. Mary and Joseph Cemetery in Newton Falls.
Local arrangements are entrusted to the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren.
